Ration-o’ Grog Beans
Every sailor is entitled to a daily ration of grog, so see what a tot of rum can do in this easy dish. Serve it for a cockpit cookout, beach bash, marina potluck. Make it on the stove, in the oven or in a slow cooker. Just make it soon and often for your crew.
Large onion, diced
6 slices thick-sliced bacon, cut up
5 cans 16 ounces each, unseasoned beans, all different (navy, black, red, light or dark kidney, pinto, garbanzo, cannellini, etc.)
8-ounce can tomato sauce
1 cup brown sugar
½ cup amber rum
Fry out the bacon with the onion until bacon bits are crisp. Spoon off all but 3 tablespoons of fat. Stir in undrained beans, tomato sauce, brown sugar and rum. Heat and eat. Serves 10.
